History of Bidar
Bidar has a rich history as a capital city for various dynasties, including the Bahmani and Barid Shahi sultanates, and was later annexed by the Mughal Empire. Known for its fortified structures and intricate architecture, Bidar was the capital of the Bahmani Kingdom in the 15th century after Sultan Ahmed Shah Wali moved his capital there from Gulbarga. After becoming the seat of the independent Barid Shahi dynasty in 1531, it was captured by the Mughals in 1657 and formally annexed in 1686. Following India’s independence, it became part of Karnataka after the state’s reorganization. The ancient megalithic culture began from about 1200 B.C.-1100 B.C., flourished up to about 3rd and 2nd century B.C. and survived up to c. 100 B.C. The Barid Shahi dynasty, who later became the Bidar Sultanate, originated from ministers who served the Bahmani rulers in Bidar.
